مؤسسه استاندارد بریتانیا (BSI) مرجع استاندارد BS ملی انگلستان است. این سازمان نه تنها استانداردهای فنی را تولید می کند، بلکه خدمات صدور گواهینامه را نیز به شرکت ها می دهد. BSI، که ابتدا به عنوان کمیته استانداردهای مهندسی در ۱۹۰۱ تاسیس شد، موسسه استاندارد بریتانیا است که عمدتا برای اهداف زیر عمل می کند:

  • برای کاهش موانع فنی و تجارت بین المللی و تسهیل تجارت و توسعه استانداردهای صنعتی مشترک برای این منظور
  • برای کاهش ضایعات و ساده سازی فرایندهای تولید و توزیع برای این منظور
  • ایجاد یک چارچوب برای اطمینان از اقتصاد، فعالیت ها و قابلیت همکاری
  • شناسایی رعایت استانداردها برای محافظت از مصرف کنندگان و افزایش اعتماد مصرف کنندگان
  • برای حمایت از اهداف سیاست های سازمان های دولتی و ارائه جایگزین های موثر به مقررات در صورت لزوم

موسسه استاندارد بریتانیا این نام را در ۱۹۳۱ دریافت کرد. شورای مشاوره استراتژیک استاندارد سازی الکتروتکنیک (ESSAC)، که در کمیسیون بین المللی الکتروتکنیک (IEC) فعالیت می کند، کمیته ملی انگلستان است.

موسسه استاندارد بریتانیا یک سازمان غیر انتفاعی است و خدمات جهانی را در زمینه های استاندارد سازی، ارزیابی سیستم، گواهینامه محصول، آموزش و خدمات مشاوره ای ارائه می دهد. امروزه یکی از سازمانهای استاندارد پیشرو جهان است. این استانداردها را در بخش های متنوعی تولید می کند. قوانین و مشخصات برنامه مدیریت و مسائل فنی را از مدیریت مداوم به الزامات کیفیت پوشش می دهد.

موسسه استاندارد بریتانیا همچنین از سازمان هایی که به دنبال کسب معیار اتحادیه اروپا هستند، حمایت می کند. مارک CE به عنوان یک برنامه کاربردی شناخته شده است که مطابق با هنجارهای اتحادیه اروپا است و محصول مطابق با الزامات دستورالعمل های اتحادیه اروپا می باشد.
